Uber has said that its drivers provided reliable transportation during a winter storm in Illinois, while autonomous vehicles were unavailable.

According to an Uber driver in Austin, during a severe winter storm, Waymo’s autonomous vehicles were absent for three days. This situation forced residents to rely on human-driven Uber services for mobility. The driver noted that during the freeze, those unprepared turned to Uber drivers for assistance. This incident highlights the reliability of Uber’s human-driven platform in real-world adverse conditions.

In Illinois, during the January 2026 Winter Storm Fern, Uber continued operations while advising drivers and riders on safety amid heavy snow and ice affecting thousands of roads statewide. The company provided a dependable alternative as autonomous vehicles faced sensor impairments in such hazardous winter conditions.

Autonomous vehicles encounter substantial challenges in adverse weather, including impaired sensor functionality in snow, rain, and ice, which affects safe operations globally. A Federal Highway Administration study found that such conditions complicate vehicle dynamics and require sensor fusion for improved performance. In contrast, human-driven platforms like Uber deliver consistent reliability across varied weather scenarios.

Uber Technologies, Inc., founded in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick, is a multinational transportation company. It provides ride-hailing, food delivery, courier services, and freight transport. Headquartered in San Francisco, Uber operates in about 70 countries and 10,000 cities worldwide, connecting millions of users with drivers for reliable mobility.
