Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen in the South Loop saw a large turnout of political candidates and voters on March 17 as the deli hosted its annual Election Day gathering, which coincided with St. Patrick’s Day this year.

The event is significant because it brings together politicians, voters, and community members in a longstanding Chicago tradition that blends civic engagement with local culture. The overlap with St. Patrick’s Day added to the festive atmosphere, drawing even more people to the popular eatery.

Throughout the day, patrons wearing “I voted!” stickers mingled with candidates running for public office in the primary elections. Politicians greeted diners, shook hands, and spoke with both voters and fellow candidates while facing members of the news media. The lunch line stretched past the main doors during peak hours as people came for both corned beef sandwiches and political conversation.

Manny’s has been a fixture in Chicago since 1942 when two Jewish immigrant brothers from Russia opened the deli using their mother’s recipes. Over decades, it has become known not only for its food but also as a meeting place for high-profile politicians including members of the Daley family, former President Barack Obama, and former President Bill Clinton.

This year’s event featured appearances by Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs, U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Robin Kelly, Governor JB Pritzker, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Alderman Brendan Reilly (42nd), Alderman Bill Conway (34th), Margaret Croke (candidate for Illinois Comptroller), State Rep. Robert Peters, City Treasurer Melissa Conyears Ervin, MWRD Commissioner Kari K. Steele, Cook County Commissioner Tara Stamps, former alderman Walter Burnett Jr., former secretary of state Jesse White, and Alderman Timmy Knudsen (43rd).

As Election Day traditions continue at Manny’s Deli each year, many see these gatherings as an important part of Chicago’s political landscape—where community ties are strengthened over shared meals and conversations.
