Police are questioning a person of interest in the shooting death of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman, officials said on March 22.
The investigation into Gorman’s death is significant for both the university community and local residents, as it raises concerns about campus safety and justice for the victim.
According to officials, Gorman was with friends at Tobey Prinz Beach in Loyola Park early Thursday morning when a masked man approached and opened fire. Thomas Murray, Loyola’s director of campus safety, confirmed details about the gunman’s appearance following the attack. Chicago Police told Block Club that they are currently questioning a person of interest but have not released further information. The Tribune reported that an arrest report cited surveillance footage showing the suspect leaving the scene with a distinct limp, which helped authorities identify him. The suspect’s name has not been made public since no charges have been filed.
A memorial has been set up at the site where Gorman was killed. Friends and family gathered Thursday night at Madonna della Strada Chapel to remember her life. Kim Johnson, a faculty member who worked with Gorman in Bible study and Cru, said: “She was always the first person who would hug me at a group, and she was always the last person, too. That’s the kind of person Sheridan was.”
Gorman’s mother, Jessica Gorman, spoke during the vigil about her daughter’s character and called for justice: “When I woke up this morning, I didn’t feel her presence,” Jessica Gorman said. “I didn’t feel her at all on the trip here from New York. But now I know she was here, with you all. She loved this place, and it didn’t take her long to find her people.… She was beautiful, inside and out.” She also addressed law enforcement directly: “Sheridan Gorman ‘was murdered,’ she said. ‘I really hate saying this, but Chicago, we trusted you with our hearts and you betrayed us.… We need answers. We need accountability, and we will not stop until the person who did this is found and locked up.’”
This remains an ongoing investigation.
