Located in the far south suburbs bordering Indiana, Lynwood was first settled by Dutch immigrants in the mid-1800s and was incorporated on December 18, 1959 with 66 eligible voters of the towns 180 residents approving the incorporation. By 1970 the population in Lynwood had grown to 1,042. In 1971 Allied Home, developed the Lynwood Terrace subdivision on a 650-acre farm. That same year the village offices opened on Glenwood-Dyer Road and the volunteer fire department was established with two firefighters. In 1972 the Van Rancho subdivision was renamed Lake Lynwood. In 1995 a special census numbered Lynwood residents at 7,614 and growing. Since there is still available farmland, new home developers are finding Lynwood to be a perfect setting for building. Recently Lynwood has seen the developments growing at a fast pace and Lynwood has become one of the fastest growing communities in the south suburbs. New home prices are continually rising and Lynwood is now seeing high-end execuctive homes priced in the $300,000.00 – $400,000.00 price range in subdivisions like Sonstead Farms, Excalibur Estates, Haven Estates 1 and the soon to be developed Haven Estates 2 and Estates of Lake Lynwood. There is also a town home community being developed under the name of Creekside in 2004.
