Open Books will close its Logan Square location at 2068 N. Milwaukee Ave. on March 1, after three years of operation. The decision comes as the nonprofit faces financial difficulties and aims to prioritize its core mission.

Executive Director Jennifer Steele announced the closure in a message shared via email, on the organization’s website, and social media. “We made this decision to best protect our mission and ensure that our partner communities, children, and families have equitable access to high-quality books, programs, and literacy spaces,” Steele wrote. “We know this news is disheartening, especially for our staff, neighbors, volunteers, and customers.”

The Logan Square store opened in 2023 with an inventory of 60,000 books across two floors. It has hosted events such as readings, poetry slams, book fairs, and book drives.

Steele noted that nonprofits and local bookstores have faced increased financial strain since the pandemic began. “Our team and Board of Directors has worked diligently to do everything in our power to keep our Logan Square store open and successful, however we can no longer operate it without risking the important work of our mission,” she wrote. “In making these decisions, we keep the children, families, and neighborhoods we serve at the center.”

She encouraged continued support for local bookstores and donations of used books to Open Books: “This decision was not made lightly as we value our presence in the richness of Chicago’s bookstore and literary communities,” Steele stated. “It is not a reflection of the efforts, talent or dedication of our team, volunteers or supporters.”

Founded in 2006, Open Books works to promote literacy among Chicago children and families through reading workshops and book grants for underserved schools and nonprofit partners. Revenue from its bookstores supports these programs.

Open Books will continue operating its other locations in Pilsen and West Loop. The final month’s hours for the Logan Square store will be updated soon on social media.

With this closure, City Lit at 2523 N. Kedzie Blvd becomes Logan Square’s only remaining bookstore.
