Oakton College has launched a forklift operator training program in partnership with the Youth Job Center (YJC) in Evanston and Atlas Toyota. The initiative is designed for students aged 18 or older who are interested in manufacturing careers. The program allows participants to obtain forklift certification and hands-on experience through a single-day course.

Training sessions take place at Atlas Toyota’s warehouse in Elk Grove Village, where students attend both classroom instruction and practical training on seven types of forklifts. Since its inception, the program has seen four cohorts complete the course, with 40 students earning their certifications so far.

Beyond certification, Oakton College helps graduates connect with local employers to support job placement efforts. Romildo Hyppolite, a recent participant, said, “Thank you again for not giving up on me, and thank you for helping me get my certification for forklift.”

To meet growing demand, Oakton plans to offer monthly training sessions starting in the spring. These will include a Spanish-language course to make the program more accessible.

“This short-term training opens gateways to a brighter future,” said Itri Papanikolla, Oakton’s Transportation, Distribution and Logistics program manager.

Oakton and YJC have also developed a customized forklift operator class aimed at youth. This collaboration provides an inclusive environment that supports early career exploration while teaching skills needed by employers.

For more information about obtaining forklift certification or supporting the initiative, individuals and employers can contact cecareertraining@oakton.edu or visit the Program’s Website.
