Northwestern University announced on Mar. 6 that its annual Dance Marathon returned to the Norris University Center, marking a significant homecoming for the event after two years at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The return of Dance Marathon is important for students and the broader community, as it continues a longstanding tradition while supporting charitable causes. The event, now in its 52nd year, faced unexpected challenges when thunderstorms and lightning forced organizers to move participants from an outdoor tent into the Louis Room inside Norris for safety just one hour into the scheduled 15-hour marathon.

Despite the weather-related disruption, organizers said that participants maintained high spirits throughout the night. Music continued with help from a DJ and student groups who kept energy levels up during the relocation. Organizers described this response as evidence of “the spirit of Dance Marathon: resilient, joyful and unstoppable.”

The fundraising total was revealed Saturday morning to cheers from attendees: more than $218,000 was raised. Most of these funds will go to Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation as this year’s primary charity partner. A portion will also benefit Evanston Community Foundation.

This year’s event marked a return to tradition by bringing Dance Marathon back under the large white tent outside Norris after recent construction projects required relocation.

Organizers said that regardless of weather conditions or logistical challenges, Northwestern students remain committed to supporting their community and charitable partners.
