Northwestern University announced on Mar. 6 a series of events taking place from April 8 to 14, including art exhibitions, cultural celebrations, academic panels and athletic competitions.
The university’s schedule highlights opportunities for students, faculty and the community to engage in discussions about social change, cultural heritage and emerging technology. The week’s programming is open to all attendees.
Events begin with the opening reception of the Dittmar Gallery’s community show, “I was here,” on Thursday, April 9 at Norris University Center. The exhibition explores themes of access and identity in artistic spaces. Later that evening, the Buffett Institute will host its spring symposium titled “Brave New Futures” at Josephine Louis Theater. The event features a performance by rapper and poet Omar Offendum with multi-instrumentalist Zafer Tawil followed by sessions led by international thinkers addressing topics such as the future of work and social change through the arts.
Athletics are also featured as Northwestern’s women’s tennis team faces USC on Friday, April 10 at Combe Tennis Center. Cultural programming continues with the third annual Nowruz event series beginning Monday, April 13 in Harris Hall. Attendees can sample ethnic cuisine and enjoy performances from Chicago-based diaspora communities; additional film screenings and workshops are scheduled throughout spring.
On Tuesday, April 14 at Norris University Center’s Wildcat Room, a panel titled “AI & the Future of Education” will bring together Medill’s Jeremy Gilbert and McCormick’s Sara Owsley Sood under moderator Karen Smilowitz to discuss artificial intelligence’s impact on learning outcomes and academic integrity.
Also on Tuesday at Galter Health Sciences Library in Chicago, curators will lead tours of an exhibit examining historical responses to mental illness in America from the eighteenth century onward. This complements a traveling exhibition focused on past approaches to mental health care.
