This week at Northwestern University, several events are scheduled across campus, offering a range of activities for students and the community.

On Thursday, March 5, The Block Museum of Art will host a screening of “Seeds,” an award-winning documentary by Brittany Shyne. The film follows three families of Black farmers in the American South over nearly ten years, highlighting their efforts to maintain land ownership. After the screening, Shyne will participate in a discussion about the documentary. The event begins at 7 p.m. at 40 Arts Circle Drive in Evanston.

Friday’s programming includes a lunch lecture by Alessandro F. Rotta Loria from McCormick School of Engineering. He will discuss rising underground temperatures beneath cities—conditions that have exceeded those recorded in Death Valley—and examine how this affects infrastructure, public health, and the environment. Rotta Loria will also talk about harnessing this heat as an energy source for urban areas. The lecture starts at 12:30 p.m. on March 6 in the reading room at 720 University Place.

Music enthusiasts can attend a performance by the Contemporary Music Ensemble on Saturday, March 7. Guest conductor Raven Chacon will lead the group in a program featuring his Pulitzer Prize-winning work “Voiceless Mass.” This piece uses church architecture to address themes related to the Catholic Church and Native Americans. Vocalist Michaela Marchi will join for Chacon’s “Owl Song.” The concert is free and takes place at Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, beginning at 7 p.m.

Northwestern’s baseball team plays its first home game of the season against UIC on Tuesday, March 10. Admission is free for all fans during this season’s eight home games. The game starts at 3 p.m. at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park, located at 2750 Ashland Ave., Evanston.

Also on Tuesday evening, Luna’s Pub & Grill hosts karaoke night as part of its weekly Next Up! Stage series. Karaoke runs from 7 to 9 p.m., inviting participants to perform on stage at Norris University Center.

“Here’s what to add to your calendar this week. As always, all are welcome!”
