Northeastern Illinois University was recognized on March 17 for graduating students with the lowest amount of student debt among Midwest regional universities, according to the U.S. News and World Report 2026 “Best Colleges” publication. The university also ranked first in Illinois and nineteenth nationally for Student Experience in the Wall Street Journal’s “2026 Best Colleges in the U.S.” Both rankings focus on undergraduate outcomes.

These recognitions highlight Northeastern Illinois University’s ongoing efforts to provide affordable education while supporting a positive campus environment. The rankings reflect both financial accessibility and quality of student life, which are important factors for prospective students and their families.

“Northeastern Illinois University has always been committed to providing our students with access to an excellent and affordable education,” said President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan, Ph.D. “Northeastern’s Mission, Vision and Values, all focus on providing an exceptional environment for learning, teaching, and scholarship to prepare our students for leadership and service in our dynamic multicultural world. I am pleased that our recent rankings reflect those goals.”

U.S. News and World Report also listed Northeastern as having the fourth-highest Social Mobility ranking among public regional universities in Illinois. According to the Wall Street Journal’s report, Northeastern holds the fifth-highest Social Mobility ranking among all colleges and universities—public or private—in Illinois. These rankings indicate that many graduates are moving up the socioeconomic ladder after completing their degrees.

The university was further noted by U.S. News and World Report for its strong Pell grant graduation performance, showing success in enrolling and graduating students with significant financial need. The Wall Street Journal evaluated Student Experience based on factors such as enjoyment of facilities, extracurricular activities, diversity, sense of community—including emotional support—and affordability.

U.S. News assessed more than 1,700 institutions using up to 17 different measures of success; eligibility required schools to offer bachelor’s degrees, hold regional accreditation, provide traditional campus-based education, and accept new full-time first-year applicants. The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse rated 584 eligible universities nationwide by examining student outcomes like salary impact as well as graduation rates, learning environment, and diversity.

These latest rankings may influence how future students view Northeastern Illinois University when considering options that balance cost with a supportive educational experience.
