Newswire, a weekly guide to Chicago government and civic action, highlighted on Mar. 18 the process of finding court dockets and the challenges faced by those seeking information about local court hearings. The article explained that a docket is a calendar or list of cases set for a court hearing or trial on a given day, as well as a summary of hearings, rulings, and motions that have occurred in a case.

The topic is important because access to accurate court information is essential for transparency and public participation in the justice system. The Chicago Documenters program recently launched a pilot project to observe how Cook County courts are implementing pretrial fairness protocols after the elimination of cash bail in 2023.

As part of this effort, Chicago Documenters introduced the role of courthouse navigator. These navigators arrive early at courthouses to obtain copies of the daily docket—referred to as the Alpha Roster Report—which lists names, case numbers, hearing times, and courtroom locations for scheduled pretrial detention hearings. This information helps ensure that notes from these hearings are accurate and fair.

However, obtaining up-to-date dockets can be difficult. The most reliable way is to visit the courthouse at 2650 S. California Ave. in person, but even then details may change after printing. Navigating these changes often requires initiative and familiarity with court procedures, which can be challenging for members of the public who want to support loved ones.

Efforts have been made by legal professionals and advocates to improve access by digitizing records and posting dockets online. While some counties like Kendall County provide online access to dockets, Cook County has not yet followed suit according to partners at Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice.

The article encourages interested individuals who have completed orientation with Chicago Documenters to participate in upcoming training sessions related to court watching. It also invites readers to review recent notes from pretrial detention hearings on documenters.org.
