Chicago philanthropist Neil G. Bluhm and the Bluhm Family Foundation have donated $50 million to the Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute (BCVI). This contribution increases Bluhm’s total support for BCVI to $135 million over the past two decades. The new funds are intended to expand access to cardiac care, enhance research efforts, and strengthen what is ranked among the top heart programs nationally and internationally.

“My main goal has always been to ensure that anyone who needs world-class heart care can get it,” said Bluhm. “We made this possible 20 years ago in downtown Chicago and built on that when we expanded care into the suburbs. It has been one of my greatest honors to watch this program touch so many lives and I’m humbled to continue supporting this mission.”

Since its founding in 2005 with an initial gift from Bluhm, BCVI has treated hundreds of thousands of patients across Chicago and surrounding regions. The institute has also worked to advance health equity by providing specialized care closer to where people live and work. Contributions from Bluhm have supported initiatives such as recruiting physicians, developing new programs like the Center for Artificial Intelligence, and establishing the Bluhm Heart Hospital at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The latest donation will be used for several key initiatives: expanding access to new technologies and therapies across Northwestern Medicine’s nine-hospital network, increasing procedural space at Bluhm Heart Hospital, supporting new research and clinical trials, fostering innovations in cardiovascular medicine, funding fellowships for training future physician talent, and recruiting physician leaders.

“Generous contributions from the Bluhm Family have continuously fueled our commitment to saving lives and putting patients first,” said Howard Chrisman, MD, president and chief executive officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “By investing in the future of cardiac medicine, BCVI will continue to stand as a beacon of hope for patients all over the world and for generations to come.”

Over the past 20 years, BCVI has experienced significant growth. From treating about 1,000 patients in its first year, it now serves more than 48,000 annually across 18 locations in greater Chicago with a staff of 2,400 clinicians. Its team includes more than 186 specialized cardiologists as well as cardiac and vascular surgeons who manage complex cases often declined by other health systems.

Notable achievements include being ranked among the top ten cardiology programs nationwide by U.S. News & World Report for a decade; placement among the top twenty hospitals globally for cardiac surgery according to Newsweek; high rankings in patient preference and heart attack survival rates; substantial growth in cardiac surgeries; a patient satisfaction rate of 96%; treatment of patients from every U.S. state plus forty countries; publication of over three thousand manuscripts in recent years; and receipt of $100 million from the National Institutes of Health since 2020.

“As we conclude the celebration of BCVI’s first 20 years, this extraordinary gift ensures we are not only honoring our past, but shaping the next 20 years of cardiovascular care,” said Patrick M. McCarthy, MD, executive director of BCVI. “This commitment keeps Northwestern Medicine at the forefront of cardiovascular medicine, empowering us to deliver superior outcomes for patients today and into the future.”
