The National Geographic Society has announced the opening of Explorers Eatery, an international food hall set to launch this summer at the Museum of Exploration in Washington, D.C. The eatery will feature five rotating food stalls representing American, Italian, Moroccan, Peruvian, and Vietnamese cuisines.
Lisa Fricker, senior director of hospitality and retail at the Society, said: “The Explorers Eatery embodies the global footprint of the Society’s mission, offering a place for visitors to taste carefully curated dishes inspired by the diverse regions where our Explorers work and lead. Food not only tells stories and lets us experience different cultures, but it is also one of the most powerful tools for bringing people together. By sharing these globally inspired dishes, we hope visitors will feel the communal spirit of exploration that defines the National Geographic Society.”
The new dining venue covers nearly 11,000 square feet and can seat up to 320 guests both indoors and outdoors. It will offer various options including a bakery café, counter service meals, shareable plates, and a bar. Sustainability efforts include reusable dinnerware and locally sourced ingredients.
Menus have been developed with Levy, a company known for creating cultural dining experiences. Andy Lansing, CEO of Levy stated: “The National Geographic Society is one of our country’s most iconic and admired organizations, and it’s an honor to join together to curate a culinary adventure at this remarkable new venue. The Explorers Eatery is a hospitality experience that is crafted to support the Society’s mission of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world. We’re excited to work with the Society to develop menus that showcase vast and vibrant cultures across the globe.”
A central feature will be The Ballard Bar—named after Explorer at Large Robert (Bob) Ballard—which will serve classic cocktails and mocktails. Ballard commented: “Exploration has shaped my life, and being part of Explorers Eatery is a great honor. Having been an Explorer with the Society for four decades, I’m thrilled to be a part of this next chapter of its history and see the Museum of Exploration take shape. I look forward to visiting, sharing stories and inspiring folks to join the Society in protecting the wonder of our world.”
The museum plans regular programming within Explorers Eatery such as trivia nights, film screenings, talks by explorers on a centrally located stage supported by Inna and Mark Moore. The space will also be available for private events.
Explorers Eatery will be open exclusively to guests visiting the Museum of Exploration.
