A Loyola University student was fatally shot early Thursday at a beach on the Far North Side, according to officials on March 19.
The victim has been identified as Sheridan Gorman, age 18. Loyola University President Mark Reed said in a statement, “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones and all who knew her. We are in close contact with law enforcement as they investigate and work to understand the full circumstances of this tragedy. Based on the information available to us now, there is no ongoing threat to our campus community.”
According to police and university officials, Gorman was with friends around 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Pratt Boulevard when a man wearing a mask approached them on the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach and fired shots. Thomas Murray, Loyola’s director of campus safety, confirmed these details. Gorman was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives are currently investigating.
Alderman Maria Hadden of the 49th Ward encouraged anyone who may have been near the beach or Loyola Park to contact her office or the local police if they saw anything suspicious. In a video shared on Facebook, Hadden said, “I’m going to be out and about the ward today and in communication with the Police Department, the Mayor’s Office and Loyola University as we process this and work to find answers for our community.”
Loyola University announced it will hold a community reflection and prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Thursday at Madonna della Strada Chapel located at 6453 North Kenmore Avenue.
