Kelli Dace opened Kelli’s Chicago, a lounge located at 210 E. 35th St., on March 27, offering residents of Bronzeville a new space to gather for coffee during the day and cocktails in the evening. Dace, who is both a mother and software engineer, said she did not initially see herself as a business owner but has embraced her role since opening the establishment in late 2024.

The lounge aims to fill a gap in the neighborhood by providing what Dace describes as a much-needed third space for community members. With few similar venues available nearby, Kelli’s has quickly become known for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse menu.

“We’re known for two things: cocktails and vibes,” said Dace, who grew up in the area and attended the University of Illinois. “You come here and you can have the day you want to have. If you come during the day, you can have a ‘work from home’ day. Come around happy hour, you can have a quick little ‘bite, drink, socialize, network’ kind of day. And if you come in the evening, you can have a ‘lounge’ kind of day.”

Dace highlighted signature drinks such as Nina’s Groove—a tropical take on a Moscow Mule—and Passenger Princess—a strawberry-infused Sidecar made with Epochal Cognac—as popular choices among patrons. The food menu features breakfast staples like muffins and bagels alongside sandwiches and avocado toast.

The journey to opening Kelli’s was not without challenges; it took two years for Dace to secure her lease after convincing both previous owners and neighbors wary due to past experiences with former establishments at that location. However, she eventually gained community support—some neighbors now host events at Kelli’s—and even partners with local organizations like Crushers Club to provide work experience opportunities for youth.

“The thing I can say is that the three youth that started working with her… they haven’t jumped to a different site,” said Rashad Grant of Crushers Club about students gaining job experience at Kelli’s.

Dace also supports other Black- and woman-owned businesses through special promotions during Black History Month and Women’s History Month by featuring brands such as Alexander James whiskey and Epochal Cognac.

Looking ahead, Dace said she hopes Kelli’s will continue serving its purpose within Bronzeville: “I don’t plan on moving anytime soon,” she said.
