Jibaritos y Más, a family-owned Latin restaurant, announced on Mar. 27 that it will celebrate its 10th anniversary next week by giving away free jibaritos at its Logan Square and Dunning locations. The giveaway will take place Wednesday from 7 a.m. to noon at the original Logan Square site and from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dunning location, with one sandwich per person.

The event marks a decade since Jibaritos y Más opened its first location at the corner of Fullerton and Kimball avenues in Logan Square in 2016. Co-owner Jesus Arrieta said the restaurant’s growth is due to loyal customers and an emphasis on fresh, high-quality meals.

“We are very thankful for our customers; those are the ones that make this possible,” Arrieta said. “They know all the support we get through the community.”

Arrieta owns Jibaritos y Más with his mother, Yelitza Rivera, who has nearly two decades of experience cooking in Puerto Rican kitchens. The business started as a small corner spot before expanding in response to growing crowds in 2020. Rivera credits her roots in Latin cooking and ties to the community for shaping Jibaritos y Más into what she describes as a Chicago staple.

“This journey has been about more than great food. It’s about sharing our culture, our traditions, and making everyone who walks through our doors feel like family,” Rivera said in a statement.

The restaurant is known for dishes such as lechón asado, ropa vieja, yuca fries, and especially its jibarito sandwich—a dish believed to have originated in Chicago—with staff reporting they make between 300-500 daily.

Arrieta reflected on building the business without prior experience: “We don’t come from a business background. We just started this with our legs and our hands and hard work,” he said. He also noted their efforts to keep prices low despite economic challenges: “We’re … keeping our prices low…and we want that people think about us [when they] get some food that won’t break the bank.”

Looking ahead, other anniversary events are planned throughout April with updates promised on social media channels.
