Project leaders announced on Mar. 10 that the new playground design for Indian Boundary Park at 2500 W. Lunt Ave. has been finalized, with construction likely to begin in 2027. The current wooden, castle-themed playground will be replaced due to deterioration and noncompliance with modern standards.

The update is significant for West Ridge families and neighbors who have advocated for a replacement of the aging structure. The new design, created by Kompan, maintains the popular castle elements while introducing features that meet accessibility and safety requirements.

Renderings presented at a recent community meeting show a main structure modeled after the existing playground’s turret, branching into slides, climbing walls, and interactive panels. Additional features include a smaller castle-like area for younger children ages 2-5, swing sets, a spinning platform with nets for climbing, and another swinging bar. The material chosen is Robinia wood, which Kompan representatives said is known for its durability.

Chicago Park District officials previously noted that the current playground does not separate areas for different age groups as required by modern standards. The new design addresses this issue and incorporates ADA-accessible features as well as improved visibility for adults supervising children.

Funding for the project includes $750,000 in state money secured by Sen. Ram Villivalam in 2022 and an additional $1 million in federal funds from U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky to complete the budget, according to the park district and Alderman Debra Silverstein (50th). Three design proposals were considered last year; neighbors supported the one most similar to the existing jungle gym.

The project is currently undergoing an environmental review required for federally funded projects before demolition of the old playground can begin.
