The family of Bryan Christopher Watson, a security guard who died while working at a River North bar, has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, according to a March 12 announcement.

Watson, 35, was fatally injured early Monday morning at the Hubbard Inn located at 110 W. Hubbard St. Police said he was trying to break up a fight between a man and several others when he was pushed down the stairs and knocked unconscious. After regaining consciousness, Watson walked into another room, clutched his chest, and collapsed. He later died at Northwestern Hospital.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet determined an official cause of death. However, the Sun-Times reported that Watson died of “traumatic arrest,” citing information from Chicago police. Authorities said the man who pushed Watson, age 32, was taken into custody but released without charges as the investigation continues.

A GoFundMe page created by Jeremy Watson described his brother as a “hardworking, loving, caring big brother” who “passed away … working hard as he always did.” As of Thursday afternoon, about $13,000 had been raised toward the $16,000 goal for funeral costs.

“Thank you all for prayers to our family and all donations are appreciated… love you big bro always,” Jeremy Watson wrote on the fundraising page.

The incident remains under investigation.
