Crews are replacing the original nearly 60-year-old windows on the 95th and 96th floors of the former John Hancock building, now known as 875 N. Michigan Ave., according to an April 9 announcement. The work is part of a larger renovation project that will transform the former Signature Room restaurant and bar into an expanded observation deck and private event space.

The changes matter because they will provide Chicago with its only multistory observation deck, which is expected to attract visitors looking for panoramic views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan when it opens in mid-2027.

More than 200 new windowpanes, each weighing about 350 pounds, are being installed as part of this redevelopment. The renovated space will include a three-story atrium, a new bar joining the already open Cloud Bar on the 94th floor, and an immersive experience for guests. Nichole Benolken, managing director at 360 Chicago—which operates the current observation deck—said that “the new windows are brighter and have less glare,” making them important for visitors who want to take photos from above. She also said that “the windows are also more energy-efficient and insulated.” Angel Hernandez from Christopher Glass and Aluminum said: “The whole point of this experience in coming up and enjoying yourself with your family and friends was to take pictures, to enjoy the space, whether it’s daytime, nighttime… And with this glass, you’re able to meet that goal.”

Replacing these windows marks the final step in phase one of renovating these top floors after Signature Room closed abruptly in 2023. Magnicity—a French company owning attractions like Tilt experience—purchased this space in 2024.

Benolken said: “We’re really looking towards the future and focusing on new experiences and providing our guests, locals and visitors to Chicago alike, with something truly remarkable.” Work on phase two is set to begin in summer.
