Karé Williams will present his exhibition, “Dancing in the Rain,” at the Dittmar Gallery from January 29 to March 4. The show explores themes of Black identity and belonging in America.
The exhibition is divided into three parts: “The Motive,” “The Dance,” and “The Rain/Cleansing.” In the first section, Williams addresses the tension between America and people of color, while also highlighting resilience amid this struggle. The final section uses rain as a symbol for renewal and healing, referencing African cosmologies and suggesting that adversity can be transformed into something positive.
Williams poses the central question: “What does it mean to be Black in America?” Rather than focusing solely on Black identity, he examines how this identity is shaped within the American context. The artist draws on his personal experiences to invite conversations about race and belonging.
The Dittmar Gallery is located on the first floor of Norris University Center at 1999 Campus Drive in Evanston.
