Cook County’s Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security has issued safety guidance for residents as a high wind warning is in effect today.
The department advises residents to bring loose items such as patio furniture, potted plants, and toys indoors. For items that are too large to move inside, officials recommend anchoring them securely to prevent hazards. Doors and windows at homes or businesses should be closed and secured, as strong winds can cause damage.
Residents spending time outdoors are encouraged to watch for flying debris, including tree limbs and street signs that may come loose during high winds. Extra caution is advised for drivers of high-profile vehicles like trucks or SUVs, which can be more easily pushed or overturned by strong gusts.
In the event of encountering a downed power line, the department instructs individuals to call 9-1-1 and their local utility company’s emergency line immediately. People are warned not to touch anything that a power line is contacting, such as tree branches or vehicles. If a power line falls on a vehicle while someone is inside, they should remain in the vehicle and avoid touching any part of the metal frame.
