The City of Chicago announced on March 19 that it will join Choose Chicago, the city’s official destination marketing organization, to lead a year-long commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. The initiative will include cultural events, neighborhood celebrations, public art, and civic programs to honor the nation’s founding and highlight the people and movements that have shaped American democracy.
The commemoration aims to recognize both the achievements and ongoing struggles in building a more inclusive society. Mayor Brandon Johnson said, “Chicago represents the soul of America, not just in our triumphs, but in our struggles to build a more just and inclusive democracy.” He added that progress has come from working people organizing for fairness and that this spirit continues in Chicago.
Kristen Reynolds, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, said, “Located in the heart of the country, Chicago embodies the values that America was founded on—freedom, inclusion, diversity, and resilience.” She encouraged visitors to explore curated itineraries and special events through Choose Chicago’s new America 250 online hub.
The city’s cultural legacy will be celebrated through music programs such as CSO America 250: A Musical Journey. Jeff Alexander, President of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association said, “We are proud to mark this historic moment through music that reflects the diverse cultural traditions that define our nation.”
Additional programming will involve city departments like Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Public Libraries, Aviation, and Parks. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa of the Park District said they look forward to welcoming everyone for America’s 250 with events commemorating American history. Chris Brown from Chicago Public Library highlighted a civic storytelling campaign inviting residents to share their reflections on this milestone.
Gabrielle Lyon from Illinois Humanities noted that Illinois plays a key role in shaping national history: “Chicago and Illinois don’t just reflect the American story—we write it.” The broader statewide effort is led by the Illinois America 250 Commission.
In addition to marking America’s semiquincentennial in 2026, Chicago will celebrate other milestones including Route 66’s centennial and the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. Residents are encouraged to participate by attending events or contributing stories throughout this commemorative year.
