Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is observing Crossing Guard Appreciation Month from February 14 through March 14, recognizing the contributions of over 600 crossing guards who help students and families cross streets safely near schools throughout the city.
“Dedicated crossing guards help ensure that students arrive safely to and from school each day,” said Dr. Macquline King, CPS’ Interim CEO/Superintendent. “They are recognizable and active members of every community in Chicago and play an essential role as part of our school support staff. We appreciate and thank crossing guards this month and throughout the year for their hard work and for serving as safety role models for our students.”
During this period, CPS has opened nominations for its annual Crossing Guard of the Year award. The nomination window runs until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026. Four winners will be selected—one from each region—and announced at a district event later in the spring. Community members, including students, school leaders, and families, are invited to submit nominations online. Candidates will be considered based on factors such as years of service and attendance.
CPS noted that its crossing guards have received attention beyond Chicago. Earlier in the school year, Joe Sass was recognized after a video showed him carrying a student across an icy crosswalk on the Northwest Side to ensure safe passage to school. Tammy Anderson, a previous winner known as the “Dancing Crossing Guard,” has been featured by local media for her distinctive outfits at intersections in Chicago’s far south region. In December 2022, Angela Thompson from Fiske Elementary in Woodlawn was highlighted by the Today Show for organizing an annual toy drive during her nearly two decades of service.
“The safety and security of our school community members is a top priority for the District,” said Chief Operating Officer Charles Mayfield of Chicago Public Schools. “Our crossing guards work diligently to ensure the safety of our students and families throughout the City each day. We are excited to honor our crossing guards during Crossing Guard Appreciation Month.”
