Chicago is offering a variety of outdoor activities and community events throughout April, according to an announcement on Apr. 1. The city’s spring season brings opportunities for residents to participate in guided tours, volunteer workdays, athletic events, and Earth Day celebrations across different neighborhoods.
The schedule aims to encourage people to explore local parks and natural areas while engaging with their communities. Activities include walking tours at the Wild Mile eco-park, running groups in Humboldt Park, stewardship days at LaBagh Woods, group bike rides with the Chicago Cycling Club, and camping workshops at Camp Reinberg.
Earth Day will be marked by several initiatives on Apr. 18, including citywide park cleanups organized by the Chicago Park District and Friends of the Parks. Additional Earth Day-themed activities feature a guided bike ride through Sauk Trail Woods and educational programs about conservation efforts at Emily Oaks Nature Center.
Other notable events this month are tree planting sessions in Archer Heights with Openlands and Cultivate Collective members from the Academy of Global Citizenship; a Major Taylor Trail group ride; history-focused bus and walking tours retracing Freedom Seekers’ journeys through Beaubien Woods; volunteer-driven planting festivals at North Park Village Nature Center; and neighborhood races like the Ravenswood Run 5K benefiting local food pantries.
Organizers say that these programs are designed for all experience levels with most requiring advance registration but welcoming participants from across Chicago’s diverse communities. Many offer free or low-cost admission as well as opportunities for learning new skills or supporting environmental causes.
As adventure season begins in Chicago, residents have numerous ways to connect outdoors—whether volunteering for restoration projects or joining recreational groups—and celebrate both nature and community involvement.
