On January 21, 2026, the Chicago City Council introduced and approved a range of planning and development measures. Among the actions taken was the approval of 27 “missing middle” projects, which will result in the creation of 81 new medium-density homes across neighborhoods including Morgan Park, South Chicago, and Chatham.

These initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to address housing needs in various communities within Chicago. The measures reflect a focus on expanding housing options and supporting neighborhood growth.

Julie Hernandez-Tomlin, Commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Fleet & Facility Management (2FM), commented on the developments: “City Council Approves 27 Missing Middle Projects, Advancing 81 New Medium Density Homes In Morgan Park, South Chicago, Chatham.”

The newly approved projects are expected to contribute to broader city goals around increasing housing supply and providing more choices for residents in different parts of Chicago.
