The Cook County Forest Preserves announced on Mar. 24 the opening of the Caldwell Woods Wellness Center in Norwood Park, following a $2 million renovation project aimed at helping visitors find peace and wellness in nature.
The center is designed to offer city residents an accessible retreat from urban life, providing opportunities for relaxation and community engagement. The facility, located along the North Branch of the Chicago River, now features upgraded amenities intended to enhance visitor experiences.
Stacina Stagner, communications manager for the Cook County Forest Preserves, said Caldwell Woods has long served as “a mini-escape for people.” She added, “It’s one of those things that makes the forest preserves so special: You’ve got all of this city busyness, people are hustling and bustling, they’re going about their days — and then you can just step into this and, suddenly, you’re not thinking about traffic and more.”
Funded partly by a $1.22 million grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Public Recreation Facility Construction program, renovations included a redone interior space with yoga mats and field guides for children. Other improvements were made to outdoor amenities such as a fire ring area, paved trails connecting to nearby facilities like Whealan Pool Aquatic Center, ADA-compliant paths to North Branch Trail, repaired stairs outside the building, and a bike fix-it station.
Weekly yoga classes have started at the center this month. Kim Eisendrath leads these sessions and said she plans to move some classes outdoors when weather permits. “There’s something about being in nature, doing yoga; you feel very connected,” Eisendrath said.
A new partnership program allows local groups or neighbors to host workshops at Caldwell Woods by submitting an online form. Tim Mondl from Cook County Forest Preserves called it “the first of its kind” partnership program for their sites. He said he has already heard from community members interested in organizing events such as native planting workshops.
Caldwell Woods was identified as a priority site during development of the Gateway Master Plan in 2015 by Cook County Forest Preserves. Stagner compared Gateway sites like Caldwell Woods to central parks found in smaller municipalities: “When you think about a small municipality having a central park… We want folks to know that you also have that here.”
Mondl noted that Caldwell Woods holds nostalgic value for many Northwest Side residents due to its history with activities like tobogganing and dancing patios. He hopes that through programs at the wellness center visitors will be able “to create memories and experiences for generations to come.”
