Chicago’s restaurant scene is known for its range of options catering to couples and those seeking memorable first dates. As Valentine’s Day nears, Block Club Chicago asked readers to share their favorite spots for a first date. The responses showed that the most popular venues are not always the most expensive but offer a unique combination of food, atmosphere, and service.

Athena in Greektown remains a favorite among diners who enjoy classic Greek dishes like saganaki served flaming at the table. Its dining room features a retractable roof and blue ambient lighting. Some guests have reported receiving complimentary desserts such as chocolate cake during special occasions.

Club Lago in River North has maintained its original Italian ambiance since 1952. Diners can expect traditional Italian comfort foods including eggplant parmigiana and chicken cacciatore while seated in large red booths.

Ella Elli in Lakeview was named Illinois’ most romantic restaurant by Food & Wine in 2022. The venue is recognized for its lounge-style setting with a fireplace, an extensive wine list, and small plates influenced by European and Mediterranean cuisines.

Gio’s Cafe and Deli in Bridgeport is appreciated for its homey atmosphere and homemade Italian offerings such as panini, pasta, meatballs, ravioli, and tiramisu. The family-run spot also offers imported groceries.

HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen in Pilsen stands out for its Thai cuisine served by chef Thai Dang and director Danielle Dang, who opened the restaurant together in 2017. Recommended dishes include Australian Wagyu, Bún Chả Hanoi, and crab fried rice.

Lula Cafe in Logan Square has focused on seasonal dishes since 1999 and serves meals throughout the day six days a week. In 2024, Lula received the James Beard Award for outstanding hospitality. Owner Jason Hammel said during his acceptance speech: “Hospitality is a team award because the hard work of emotional labor isn’t about how we treat guests, necessarily, but it’s about how we treat each other… We truly believe [at] Lula that hospitality is love.”

Moonflower Bar in Portage Park offers cocktails like The Kiss and Tell or The Late Bloomer alongside small plates and music. Its basement speakeasy Nightshade provides another setting for late-night dates.

Nori Chicago operates locations in Edgewater, Lakeview, and Wicker Park serving sushi rolls such as Spicy Tuna Roll or Fire Dragon Roll with beer or sake available at select locations; take-out options are also offered.

RPM Italian in River North is noted as a destination for special occasions with menu items including Maine lobster ravioli and black truffle chicken Vesuvio. Staff members often help diners choose what to order at this lively restaurant owned by Bill and Giuliana Rancic along with Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises.

Urban Vegan in Ravenswood caters to both vegans and non-vegans looking for Thai dishes like pad Thai or yellow curry. Yelp users highlight items from the “Chef’s Special” section of the menu as favorites.
