Neighbors in Gage Park will have an opportunity to learn about Amazon’s plans for the Central Steel & Wire Plant at a community meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening. The meeting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. at Las Brisas del Mar, located at 3207 W. 51st St., according to a notice from Ald. Jeylú Gutiérrez’s office.

Amazon intends to redevelop the 70-acre site at 3000 W. 51st St. into a delivery station, which is the final step in its fulfillment process before packages reach customers. “Our plan to redevelop this property and open a delivery station is rooted in providing fast delivery and great service to customers on the southwest side of Chicago,” said Amazon spokesperson Amber Plunkett in an emailed statement.

The proposed facility will include support for a fleet of electric delivery vehicles, along with landscaping and other property improvements, according to Plunkett. She also stated that Amazon would provide information during the meeting about its operations, available jobs, and ways it supports local communities.

Amazon purchased the property from Central Steel & Wire in 2021, as shown by Cook County records. At that time, Amazon announced plans to convert it into a delivery station with construction expected to begin in 2023.

Facilities like this typically employ between 100 and 200 full-time workers, as well as nearly 400 additional employees hired through Amazon’s delivery service partners, Plunkett said.

Amazon also operates another delivery station nearby at a leased warehouse on 3507 W. 51st Street. Workers at that location have previously held demonstrations calling for higher wages and improved work conditions.
