A Better Chicago has announced the launch of Every Day Counts, a new initiative aimed at addressing chronic absenteeism among students in several Chicago communities. The organization will invest $2 million in the first year to support community-based organizations, schools, and civic partners working on this issue.
The initiative targets six neighborhoods: Austin, Englewood, Garfield Park, South Lawndale, South Shore, and Woodlawn. Organizations selected for funding can receive up to $500,000 for one year based on their project proposals.
Beth Swanson, CEO of A Better Chicago, said: “Chicago knows the impact students missing school has, from lower academic achievement to decreased long-term economic opportunities. In order to reverse the impact, we need new solutions. This RFP is about elevating bold solutions from organizations that know their communities best to make sure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.”
These communities were chosen using data from the 2023/2024 school year that showed high rates of elementary students at risk of chronic absenteeism—defined as missing 10-35 days per year—and high school students who are severely absent—missing 35-86 or more days annually. Community organizations and nonprofits are encouraged to propose prevention strategies for elementary students or engagement efforts for high schoolers.
Interested groups can find more information online or join an informational session scheduled for January 29 at 3:00 PM CT. Applications must be submitted by February 27 at 5:00 PM CT.
A Better Chicago describes itself as a venture philanthropy organization focused on investing in promising nonprofits that provide opportunities for youth experiencing poverty. To date, it has distributed over $83 million in unrestricted funding and management support to its portfolio organizations.
